'Tis the Monster Season

When your child has monster fears, it’s no treat. But there are a few tricks that can ease their anxiety and help them to gain control this Halloween when monsters take the stage.

According to experts, one out of every four children between the ages of 3 and 7 experience monster nightmares. Often the problem becomes so severe that children begin to practice reactive co-sleeping, a clinical term for getting in bed with mom and dad.

Kim West, Sleep Disorder Specialist, LCSW-C , says that monsters can be caused by active imaginations and sometimes parents create problems without even realizing it. “Allowing your children to watch scary television programs before bedtime or even what appears to be benign fun in chasing your kids and playing monster could be at the root of their anxiety.”

West, who works with children in her practice, notes that,” Monsters may not be “monsters” per se. It could be any type of fear or anxiety but verbalized as a “monster.” She adds, “Even regular animals they may have contact with during the course of their day can become scary at night. In addition, sleep deprivation, stress or poor diet can result in difficulty at bedtime.”

Some strategies for relief include creative visualizations where the parent guides the child through books or stories. West suggests that parents encourage kids to fantasize about going into their favorite book and becoming a part of the story. Other suggestions include providing reassurance by simply holding the child and telling them that they are safe and telling kids to, “throw away the thought.”

Of the myriad of products on the market that claim to eliminate monsters, psycho-aromatherapist and mother of 3, Lisa Walton, found that her own creation worked best when her 4 year old began having monster issues back in 1999.

“My grandmother told me about “monster spray”, which is just a bottle of water kept by the bedside. I was already studying essential oils and did some research, thinking that the psycho-aromatherapeutic properties would work to calm my son. It did. And I was amazed. The concept of monster spray is by no means new, I just put my twist on it.”

Monster Go Away! spray is a blend of the high quality essential oils of Roman Chamomile, French High Altitude Lavender & Italian Mandarin . This particular synergy works to calm the central nervous system through inhalation. The simplicity of the psychology involved in “spraying away” monsters coupled with the soothing effects of the oils has provided relief for children nationwide and Walton developed a website which she hopes will become a resource for parents searching for monster solutions.

There are differing schools of thought regarding the concept of monsters. Many believe acknowledging the monster to your child adds to the panic, as you are validating their scary visions, which may make it worse.

Regardless, active imaginations are at work and children who are empowered with targeted strategies are more equipped to overcome their fears.

“The response to the product has been amazing. I get letters from thankful moms all the time. It is fine and well to tell your kid there is no such thing as monsters but that does nothing to solve the problem. If that was all it took to make them go away or any other fear for that matter, psycho-therapy would not exist for kids or adults. It is real to them. When they feel like they have control, the tables turn and the monsters go away.”
